I think you're missing alot of the story here. Trumps wants talks with Iran; Bolton opposes it. Trump wants to pull out of Afghanistan. Bolton does not. They are fundamentally at odds over the DPRK. Bolton is also a skeptic of arms control negotiations w/ Russia which Trump wants

Trump wants those things but he's too incompetent to carry them out. And he is surrounded by people who are ultra-hawkish. Trump's bid to change foreign policy has failed.
