Like vulgar Marxism, Chomsky is 90% right but the 10% he's wrong about is important.

He doesn't have a Gramscian sense of how ruling class gets buy in for bad policies. And while he's right that we have a moral obligation to critique foreign policy of our nation first, that doesn't deal with problem of bad actors outside our nation who we have no control over.

Which I think is a consequence of his view of moral obligation. He’s so focused on the malign effects of US power (about which he is right) that there’s not a lot of room for other considerations

I think for the piece I’ll probably describe him as a prosecutor rather than a judge. Prosecuting a guilty client.

Definitely an anarchist at heart. Deeply suspicious of bureaucracy and power

His anti-Leninism has served him well.

My thing was always (I think he's 90% right or more) he's kind of ahistorical, and really really american. It's just like, statically comparing this wrong thing to the standards we say we have, and doing it over and over. Useful, but how do we get from this to something better?

That's the flip side of the anti-Marxism. Not much of a theory of change or historical evolution, just an ending story of ordinary people and exploitive elites (which is true but not the whole truth).

Yep. But anyways as I learned more and more about the world, being a foreign correspondent for 12 years in the global south etc etc, I slowly came to the conclusion that I was more right agreeing with him as a teen than when I thought I had "matured" past him at 24 or w/e
