Disagree—2020 is better for Bernie because four years of Trump have shown something dramatically new can replace the Bush-Clinton dispensation. The neoliberal consensus didn’t die immediately from the wounds of the Iraq War and Great Recession, but it never recovered.https://twitter.com/DouthatNYT/status/1222566830642024448 …

Belated, yes, America's problems in '20 are problems of decadence rather than late-1970s crisis, and economically '16 might have been a better year to gamble on Bernie ... https://twitter.com/davidfrum/status/1222197407187972096 …

I think the way Bernie can frame it "Trump promised to break the neoliberal consensus but he wasn't up to the job, just gave tax cuts to his buddies. I'm the real deal."

That’s basically what the new Bernie ad says.

He can try (and I hope he succeeds) but I have to agree that 2016 was a better year for Bernie in the general. Fear makes people conservative, and people are afraid and tired of fighting and uncertainty. Stability may look more tempting than revolution to a lot of folks.

To be clear, I still think Bernie is the best shot to beat Trump. But I think he and the political revolution would have had an easier time of it in 2016, when folks were more amped up to shake off a tired status quo.

I think that’s right too. I think would be hard in practice to allow him to win, but it’s a serious play.
