If you believe that the pursuit of education in and of itself is a social good, then I struggle to see how an unemployed engineer is a worse outcome than an unemployed poli sci grad. Both pursued higher education, and took their chances on the market.

Most crucially, our current glut of engineers wasn't the result of government planning. It was the result of students making rational choices in pursuit of their aims, and simply getting unlucky.

In the long run, if you ask me who I would put my money on -- the engineering graduate in a depressed Alberta, or the poli sci one -- I can tell you where I'd place my bets.
