Um, my understanding of the last 60 years is that every time a modern army armed with cluster bombs & napalms has faced a militia (Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq) -- the modern army ended up eventually beating a retreat.https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1221827357276807169 …

People have pointed out that in criticizing this metaphor I ignored the crucial phrase "on an open field" -- it's true that, as a Vietnamese officer once said, that the modern army wins in the open field, but it is also irrelevant.https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1221827357276807169 …

Armies used to get to choose the field, but these days the fighting happens where it happens.

I can't think of anything that is less an "open field" than a US presidential election.

An election isn't a war of attrition, it's a battle. Frum is right that Bernie's movement would have a rough time in the general election. You are right in that progressive liberalism likely wins the long war.

I temporarily lit it up but once the tweet was posted I saw my avi and I knew to delete. I’m not delusional, but I don’t want to give them bernie bro fodder. That being said, I vehemently disagree with the analysis in this article.

No. This is wrong. It depends on the attackers savagery. Russians showed in Ground they could adapt and destroy their enemy in a city. Vietnam is a poor analogy in this regard.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Grozny_(1999%E2%80%932000) …
