FDR cultivated Father Coughlin's support early in his administration, then began to distance himself from Coughlin as he became nuttier and started to brag excessively of his influence in the White House. Coughlin became a Roosevelt foe, but FDR's popularity won out.
The bodyguard thing is definitely much more plausible! I was just wondering if FDR as master killer still had any resonance.
