They symposium brought up Philip Roth as a precursor but in many ways Saul Bellow (who is unmentioned) is a better comparison -- born between grubby materialism & mysticism, wanting it all and luxuriating in American excess.

This is a great discussion! Also, and this is probably just me, but orthogonally to his Jewishness, Ratner feels a lot like “The Toad” from “Wind in the Willows”: the despair-fueled, obsession-sparked, madcap belief that just one more scheme will set the rest right.
