Question for historians: in American Political Tradition, Richard Hofstadter says the Founding Fathers had "a vivid Calvinistic senses of human evil & damnation" -- this seems wrong to me. Wasn't Calvinism in abeyance by late 18th century? Weren't they Deists & Anglicans etc?

Why Hofstadter? I taught his Social Darwinism a decade ago. I am not sure if I understand angst against him.

Regardless of the value of Hofstadter as an historian, it doesn't matter. His work actually had a significant influence on American thinking of the mid to late 20th century. Furthermore, like Barbara Tuchman, he wrote extremely well. Given people in the LoA, he is worthy.
