Has anyone written a piece on why Uncut Gems was shut out of the Oscars (and some other awards)? It's kind of mystifying to me.

That was the exception and it took people by surprise -- so much so that the hosts announced the wrong movie as best picture.

A24 released Moonlight + Lady Bird. I think it’s less that, more the combo of a movie/character some viewers/voters found unpleasant, an actor they hadn’t recognized even when acclaimed + working w/a director they liked (PTA/Punch Drunk Love), directors they haven’t embraced yet

I should add, I loved it and wish it got nominated. I also think the movie’s best shot - Sandler - was contending in an unusually stacked year for best actor

I dunno, not bad for a company formed in 2012 (but yes, mostly technical awards).pic.twitter.com/HeFjsiZFIL

A24 has a huge amount of clout for an independent studio.

They're also the finest in existence. Their work is absolutely profound. Thrilled for Lighthouse's nom, but no Defoe?? COME ON. Something must be up there.

Yeah October/November releases tend to do best, iirc. And gems was very late, particularly with an early award ceremony this year
