If you're as scared of a very moderate form of social democracy as you are of authoritarian ethnic nationalism, you might be a liberal!

i think you mean you're using it loosely or as an intramural term of abuse, not as its actual meaning?

It's been an intramural term of abuse for a darn long time, though, so it's a question of whether you're a proscriptive or a descriptive linguist at this point.

It seems weird to use "liberal" to refer primarily to people who themselves call themselves "moderate" and specifically REJECT "liberal" as a self-identification.
-
Liberalism is the foundation of US society and it pervades every aspect of our lives. Even "conservatives" in the US are Liberal ideologically in that they view individual liberty as a primary social good, and they see the market as a primary means of mediating conflict

Is the Times Editorial Board the official authority on what is liberal? I must have missed than in the latest addition of Neoliberal’s Quarterly.

I'm a 36 year old liberal and I have no idea who Phil Ochs is. I'm fairly certain most of my liberal friends would say the same. Maybe use better definitions.
