With Esptein, Dershowitz wasn't just a lawyer representing his client. There was some sort of extra-professional relationship. By how own admittance, Dershowitz went to Epstein's house and got a massage (from, he claims, an "old, old" woman).
It's that extra-professional relationship with Epstein that is troubling, along with the fact that the sweet-heart deal Dershowitz secured was highly irregular. This is something different than a lawyer (rightly) providing a full-throttle defense of a client.
As of December 2, 2018 -- less than a year before Epstein's death -- Dershowitz was still providing Epstein with legal advice. "He has called me a couple of times about legal issues, because I'm still technically his lawyer...You never stop being a person's lawyer."
I concur. The difference is Dershowitz didn't just defend Epstein. As it is with Trump and Rudy, it appears that Dersh let his personal life and interests overlap with Epstein's, which is a line no lawyer should ever cross with a client.
The Trump thing is also different than the others, and in its way worse. Trump claimed von Bulow, OJ, and Epstein were innocent, or at least were not proved guilty. He has now claimed Trump's actions, if true, weren't wrong, or at least not punishable. Rather an important step.
