One the one hand, I do think it's important (now more than ever) to read Carl Schmitt. On the other hand, it matters a lot whether you see Schmitt as a cautionary tale or a how-to guide.https://twitter.com/AntonJaegermm/status/1217993041866346497 …

I'll probably write a proper essay about this at some point, but it is absolutely the case that the Carl Schmitt revival of the last 30 years (visible on both the left and right) tracks closely with the breakdown of the liberal order.

That’s been widely accepted - that both left and right used Schmitt as a battering ram against liberalism. I’d say that tendency has subsided quite a bit in the last 5-10 years though.

Not on the right. They are more interested in Schmitt than ever.

Who are you thinking of? I can think of Vermeule, but I'm not sure that's who you have in mind. In my sense, the publication of Schmitt's diaries from the 1920s-1930s in 2015-16 - which establish his unequivocal, continued anti-Semitism - have made people much more cautious.

Some of the people around First Things magazine and the recent debate on the right about Frenchism (with the anti-French people citing Schmitt).
