What I took away is that Fink is type, rather than an Odets stand-in—a playwright whose work becomes a sensation because of its subject matter-slash-politics, not because it was actually any good. He's a hack who lucked into a hot-button success.
The Coens are populists in the best sense; they loathe (and are amused by) pretentious artistes. The Ralph Fiennes character in HAIL, CAESAR!, e.g., oozing self-importance while directing a ho-hum mid-century "prestige" drama.
Having values is show in most coen bros films to either be a source of hypocrisy or of ridiculousness. These are two routes to the same nihilistic contempt. Which, to be clear, I often find delightful!
It took a long time but I have come see Barton Fink as a negative self-portrait, a horror movie about self-absorption. The Coens are morbidly terrified of taking themselves too seriously, and especially of getting caught at it.
