I didn't dwell on the philosophical content in the thread, really, but I'm down on his aesthetics as well. At best, I think his aesthetics is mediocre attempt to revisit romanticism that (had he been writing in the early 20th century) would've been lost among better versions.

The short version of this critique is that Scruton is basically a coarser version of the late 19th century romantics, but was able to get away with this coarseness b/c the British audience was (a) tired of modern and post-modern are and (b) didn't have a better alternative.

He hated modern architecture, modern as in Van Der Rohe and Le Corbusier, because is not as agreeable as a georgian terrace. That is not great aesthetic thinking. I didn't even knew the guy was a homophobe and racist, but his views on aesthetics are narrow as well

You really should investigate the late David J. Levy (he died of AIDS - a real loss!): "Political Order", "The Measure of Man", "Hans Jonas: the Integrity of Thinking" - what further works he might have produced!
