Disney achieved the amazing feat of making Star Wars banal. Even Lucas at his worst didn't do that. https://twitter.com/ebruenig/status/1216196817039319041 …

One thing about Rise of Skywalker is that it recalibrates the rest of the canon. I always loved The Last Jedi and now like it even more. Rogue one looks better. Even the prequels get upgraded from "bad" to "bad but at least not banal."

The problem is that "Rise of Skywalker" was written to placate Reddit, 4chan, and reactionary YouTube comment sections. But they didn't realize those people literally cannot be pleased.

And that they make up like 10% of the fandom despite what online discourse can look like. Online media bears some blame for it, hunting clicks by centering the discourse on that small but loudest %.

A consensus seems to have formed around Rogue One that makes me want to revisit it. I think I might have fallen asleep in the theater.

I never liked "The Last Jedi," although for different reasons than most of the Twitter masses, but I think "The Rise of Skywalker" highlights another flaw with it: the large extent to which TLJ was marking time. We go from small resistance band on the run minus Luke to the same.

Disney and Abrams managed to ruin Return of the Jedi with Rise of Skywalker.

The Last Jedi put the franchise into a ditch that even the best writer/director couldn't have clawed out of. JJ Abrams isn't even a writer/director, more of a corporate PR flack. It was always going to be bad. Its pettiness did make it funny in spots tho.

The Last Jedi is great and sections of the fandom blame it and use it as a scapegoat for box office failures of Solo/RoS. Hard to see a way forward when so many people have such a rage induced opposition to doing so. The rumors of what the next movies are about aren't encouraging

I thought RoS was fun in a mindless kind of way. TLJ was a depressing slog that I don't think I could sit through again

My only problem with ROS was it felt so rushed to do everything it wanted it tripped over itself. Plenty of opportunities to slow down and reflect but instead they just went nope, full speed ahead, guys!
