There have been four American presidential elections since the Iraq War started. Twice the Democrats ran with a nominee who had supported the war (Kerry, Clinton) and lost. Twice they ran with one who opposed the war (Obama) and won.

Hoc ergo propter hoc. Kerry ran in ‘04, before the war had become unpopular. Opposition to Iraq helped Obama win the nomination in ‘08, but it wasn’t the deciding factor in Nov (the crash?). Same with ‘12 and ‘16, except for the chronically dissatisfied left.
