The Claremont-written mutant comics seemed advanced because they had far more diversity than other comics of the 1980s. Now it looks like they have far more diversity than movies based on them released 3 decades later.https://twitter.com/NewMutantsUp/status/1214185034799878144 …

I had mixed feelings about Chris Claremont's writing in the 1980s. It was wordy when compared to Frank Miller and unsubtle when compared to Alan Moore. But in terms of representation, Claremont was decades ahead of his time.

One thing I've noticed in reading Claremont's X-Men for the first time recently as an adult: In the early years, the series is full of women pilots. Basically any time there's a pilot and there's no reason to assign one gender or another, he'll make the character a woman.

It's because his mom was a pilot. Chris can actually fly a plane himself!

I loved Moore's subtlety. All 3 had their respective skills

I had the pleasure of meeting Chris Claremont a couple of years back and thanking him for the first superhero that looked like me (Sunspot).

Those feel like tricky comparisons to me. Claremont was a pop writer (an excellent one!); Miller and Moore were artists, going for something bigger. But I agree with your premise: most certainly ahead of his time.

Claremont is the greatest "comicbook writer" in last 40 years, the illusion of change and character progression in what had to remain a static unchanging world (the Jean clones notwithstanding no need for infinite retcons) he new he was writing General Hospital and excelled at it

His writing was better in my view for young people. As an adult, Moore and others hold up better.
