DOLEMITE IS MY NAME: The story is pretty predictable—every beat arrives on schedule—but man, this cast is great. Especially Eddie Murphy, but everyone else too. And as formulaic as the script can be, it can't smother the sheer delirium of the subject matter. Recommended.

I thought it was underrated. The script is as predictable as you say but Murphy, Snipes etc are so great. And also the scenery and clothing very evocative of the 1970s.

Yes, it did a terrific job of evoking that time and place. (Unsurprisingly—it's the same director who made HUSTLE & FLOW, which among its other virtues is just a great Memphis movie.)

I like that old filthy street folk poetry (go here to see what Moore was working from: https://www.amazon.com/Get-Your-Water-Swim-Like/dp/B000006NGT …), and Moore's movies have a giddy weirdness that make them fun viewing.

I think the Signified Monkey is a great piece of folk poetry.
