What's weird to me is that the film shows 13A getting passed using hardball tactics that ranged from "can't be done today" to "somewhat illegal" and Spielberg thinks the modern takeaway should be we need politicians to reach across the aisle and build concensus.

Took Sean Wilentz's Rise of the American Nation in college. Great course, but definitely with a populist bent - and a love of spectacle - so I'm not surprised.

I don’t know what these critiques are, but I thought the film performed a valuable service in reviving interest in the 13th amendment’s passage.
