okay i'm going to do one (1) star wars take: old star wars was good because the technical limitations of the time prevented the quite banal vision of the filmmaker from being fully realized, and allowed for the imagination of the audience to fill in the universe

once lucas has the ability to realize his vision it completely destroyed everything that was compelling about the movie: its interesting background, minor characters, technology etc.

the thing that kept it going was that it started in media res, episove IV, and it wasn't clear if the story would ever be resolved, so you had to imagine the rest. now that it's all being filled in, it's just boring crap.

The in media res & fact that most of the universe & story was off stage wasn't just a technical limit. It was a brilliant storytelling stroke. Alas, Lucas decided to do fan fiction filling out for his own narrative.
