I forgot how much is set up so early; droids working in Spice Mines in Kessel, fears of rebel sympathies in the Imperial Senate

it's a @trekonomics hot take I've come around to, but the most deeply unsettling feature of the Star Wars universe is the sentience of droids and the nature of memory wipes.

That's one of the biggest problems with Stars Wars -- the epochal events are crammed into the span of 2 generations.

Doesn’t Obi-Wan say though that Vader helped hunt down the Jedi? Which means the Jedi purge happened during Obi-Wan’s lifetime. And the lightsaber he gives Luke is specifically his father’s.

So as much as some lines act like the Jedi are a long-extinct group, other lines in ANH imply their end was much more recent. It’s less that it was retconned and more that ANH doesn’t actually seem sure of how long the Jedi have been gone.

That's why they made the movies about that era! If there was peace for a thousand years it might be cool but not appropriate for a movie called Star Wars.
