Man. I forgot how much of the first few chapters of Dune is just nearly unbroken exposition. I guess it’s a testament to the worldbuilding it’s not completely unreadable.

I don’t think info dumps are awful *per se* if they’re done elegantly. I think they’re bad when they require people to have lengthy conversations no two human beings in that world would ever have.

Though as I said earlier, it’s a testament to Herbert’s worldbuilding that the book is so compelling and readable when these scenes ought to be clunky.

It's contextual. KSR is great at exposition and the nature of his projects require it (imagine Aurora or 2312 without it!) Where necessary, I'm all for a well-delivered exposition. When unnecessary, or when papering over storytelling cracks, it's awful.
