Man. I forgot how much of the first few chapters of Dune is just nearly unbroken exposition. I guess it’s a testament to the worldbuilding it’s not completely unreadable.

Hence not great literature.

I’ve been trying to get through dune for 6 months. Think I’m a quarter of way and have just given up.

I read it when I was ~13 and not educated to know that exposition = bad but I remember it as one I f the most fun reading experiences of my life! But then I love the long philosophy of history digressions in War and Peace

There's an argument -- made by Kim Stanley Robinson among others -- that info-dumps can be actually good and the common literary critique of exposition is just a knee-jerk bias.

I'm trying to read it now because I like Denis Villeneuve and am looking forward to the movie and this tweet has filled me with intense despair

It’s actually quite readable despite that, though there’s an excellent audio book if you find it sloggy.
