I don’t agree but I get this critique. Feels like we are coming to the end of this kind of movie.https://twitter.com/beyerstein/status/1204428337235550208 …

The Irishman is the culmination of a 50-year-career by a 77-year-old director. Of course it's a period piece. It's a period piece that succeeds brilliantly on its own terms.

I liked it, and I love Scorsese, but I can understand why some people may feel they have had enough of these stories.

I dunno, I feel like stories of the corruption fo the American empire and the shattering of working class solidarity are more relevant than ever!

The politics were the most interesting thing about the movie for me. The role these gangsters played behind the scenes in American politics, Scorsese getting at something important and difficult.

Yep -- and I would say that in our year of the Lord 2019 with Donald Trump as president, a film about the overlap between gangsters and politicians is not merely of antiquarian interest.
