I'm sure that all (or nearly all) of Frank Sheeran's stories are a pack of lies. But for the purposes of Scorsese's movie, they are useful because they allow him to weave together the rich body of mafia lore into one story. The comedy made the movie for me. That and the simplicity w/which the movie portrays the characters & their motivations. They aren't smart or complex and they don't grow or develop. They kill for power. The complexity is brought by the viewer and the characters' place in history
