I’ve been against it because it was touted as you did, “free college.” “Free *public* college” (or close to it) was what there was until the Republicans began choking off state aid, is altogether better justified, and promotes egalitarianism.

Supply and demand. If everyone gets to go to college where will all these seats come from? Either they become over crowded and quality goes down or build more schools raising prices. If everyone goes to college no longer makes you more employable. You will have cashiers with MBAs
