RFK was counsel on the improper activities in labor committee in the 1950s and wrote a whole book about it, so maybe he was just knowledgeable and genuinely concerned about it?

I'm just reading Jack Goldsmith's new book on Hoffa and it has a good analysis of RFK's general motives in going after organized crime. Also, fair to say that the Mafia role in the 1960 election is wildly overstated in popular culture.
