It's all very well and good to say "the ACLU should be a non-partisan organization open to civil libertarians of all stripes" but in reality George H. W. Bush attacked Dukakis in 1988 for being a "card-carrying member of the ACLU." So that ship sailed a long time ago.

It's not about us surviving, it's about our society/institutions surviving. Maybe they're already too far gone to retrieve, if so, we're doomed. Democracy requires the ability to lose and accept it.

at same time, the good ideas need to win and come to the top - and we have to work as hard as we can to make that happen, yet w/out destroying our institutions/system/democracy.

This may be hopelessly idealistic mush, but our system was built on assumption we would, at least on some large-scale approximation, behave like this.
