The key difference was that Hobsbawm lived in a country that had a robust socialist culture even under Thatcherism. Genovese didn't have that, so became unmoored (although he was, interestingly, fond of Jesse Jackson even after right turn).
Indeed, Genovese tried to create such a culture himself when he founded Marxist Perspectives. But that wasn’t a robust enough social ecology to protect him from his own idiosyncrasies and it predictably ended after just ten issues.
