Pauline Kael, Andrew Sarris, Manny Farber, and Jonas Mekas all had proteges and acolytes, or so I've heard-tell, but to my knowledge John Simon had only one: Charles Thomas Samuels, whose career and life were tragically brief.

Samuels' book on Updike is good -- he also did the Updike interview in Paris Review, IIRC.
