Still listening to Dracula. The best part of the book is the beginning, with Jonathan Harker figuring out he is locked in a castle with an evil weirdo and not just on a recipe finding holiday to the Carpathians.

Then there are a lot of other people's diaries and a lot of faff about how wonderful Real Men are starring the main cast and there's barely any Dracula at all and Dr Seward misses his phonograph

Stoker was obsessed with phonographs, typewriters & other gadgets. If he were writing it now, the novel would be 30% iphones and TikTok.

Yep, exactly right. The tech stuff is also there to heighten the contrast between England (modern, enlightened) and Romania (primitive, atavistic, primordial).
