That's only kind of true in the US silent era, which—as Richard's Lois Weber hat-tip suggests—was filled with Protestant films abt religion—DeMille, Griffith, Micheaux—& many Prot churches— including and esp black churches—eagerly exhibited (religious and non-religious) films.
