Dem voters second guessing themselves about electability is a big dynamic. I actually think it's hurt Klobuchar & Booker more than Sanders & Warren. K & B are underperforming because the type of voter who worries about electability gravitate towards white men.https://twitter.com/daveweigel/status/1196089572695957505 …

You hear it again and again with Democratic voters: They *personally* agree with Sanders or Warren on X, but they're scared and think that elusive white guy in Michigan wants a more moderate candidate. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1196084956713357313 …

This is the issue. There's a swath of Dem voters who aren't asking "what do I want" but "what do Trump voters in mid-west diners" want: a by-product of certain type of New York Times coverage.https://twitter.com/rmc031/status/1196128844257878016 …

same thing in Nevada, 77 percent say they personally don't care about gender, but 46 percent think swing voters want a man pic.twitter.com/vr0eYBo2OK

It's weird how many Dem voters have forgotten that their most successful politician electorally since FDR was a black guy named Barack Hussein Obama -- first Dem to win over 50% of the vote in a presidential election twice since 1940s.

Is it just NYT diner coverage, or could it be an unexpected consequence of “America is fundamentally white supremacist and patriarchal” framing?

The press is CONSTANTLY pushing the republican talking point that Dems can’t go too far left or the world with explode. Running to the center has not worked well for Dems. What if HRC had chosen someone for Dems to get excited about? It likely would have been enough.

That "I don't care about characteristic X but I think other people do" is also a classic pattern when people feel social reluctance to directly admit to a view that they themselves hold (cf Bradley Effect).

Alternatively, people *do* care about gender but don't want to admit it so they project onto other people? There's a name for this but I can't remember what it is.

Fvck trump voters we don’t need their votes, we need to expand the electorate to include people who haven’t been voting because democrats have stopped caring about what matters to us

It’s weirdly hard to imagine a swath of rural R voters doing the opposite. Pocketing their own preferences to imagine what R some avocado toast-liking- D-leaning suburban professional - let alone some urban voter - might go for.
