Being white is an immutable property. If you are white (have a pale complexion and have European ancestry from a particular time period), you can’t change that. Saying that’s no ok is racist. Saying the whiteness was “constructed“ is vapid wordplay.pic.twitter.com/QjUgN2Bbty

Being white is not immutable since, as numerous historians have shown, the definition has changed over time. American courts in early 20th century debated whether Finns were white. Learn some history before you embarrass yourself further.

You're confusing talking about words with using words to talk about things. The definition of "white" has changed. I agree. The fact that I am white under a current definition is immutable, as it's just a label applied to my complexion and ancestry.

If we: A) Identify people as white based on their ancestry and complexion and B) Condemn them for being white That's racist.

“It’s not okay to be white” is the important conclusion here, surely? Could...could there be any downsides to this type of thinking, do you think?

Whatever you include as white is highly irrelevant in the end. It doesn't change the fact that it's still okay to be one.

I just don’t understand how you can say “whiteness is an unhelpful construct” (okay, I get it) and then say “it’s not okay to be white”. It’s no longer the concept that’s the problem but the section of society identified by that concept! Anyway, I’m sure she got all her “likes”

I completely agree with Jeet's assessment here. Way too many people speak dismissively when others talk about that construction without trying to learn even the minimum of the history of that construction and the social and political structures built around it

I'm ok with learning history. And of course I think words and concepts are constructed/fluid. What I'm not ok with is identifying people based on immutable properties and condemning them for it, then using the fact that the label for those properties is mutable as an excuse.
