I have to wonder if going in that direction is a good idea though. Comic books are a niche market aimed at a small number of devoted consumers. If seeing every Marvel movie becomes essential to enjoying them, would mainstream audiences put up with that?

The problem is it’s hard for a franchise to go on for decades and not eventually slip into a mess of canon and continuity.

I was a comics nerd as a kid & one of the big reasons i dropped it in the mid-80s was exactly this. Just couldn't afford to buy 12 different titles to follow one story. It seemed like a money-grab and, frankly, a chore (i mean, the stories were never all that great).
