I think the mistake people are making here is thinking that Scorsese is a pure auteurist. But he's never been a Cassavetes or Bergman let alone a Brakhage. He's always tried to make expressive films that have mass appeal. He thinks economic structure now makes that harder to do.
I said "pure auteurist" -- there's a range and I specified what part of the range Scorsese is not on.

No such thing. Stop. As if being an auteur makes a director better than another one. You may not like Scorsese but he is, perhaps, the knowledgeable person on the subject of film. He has gone out of his way to talk about and archive movies from all over the world.
