      1. The amount of nonsense in this tweet is really astonishing. McGovern didn't lose because of his economic policy but Nixon used Feds to turbo-charge economy & create false boom (which quickly deflated after Nixon re-elected)https://twitter.com/LHSummers/status/1188083974146592774 …

While the wealth tax currently polls fairly well, I am struck that in last half century, the economics of candidates Warren & Sanders most resembles George McGovern, who later regretted his anti-business tone and lost badly to Nixon, the past President who most resembles Trump.

      2. Also McGovern's economic populist message undercut when big labor unions, for complicated reasons, opposed his candidacy. Partly it was because on their issues McGovern was a proto-neoliberal (he would later become lobbyist against Employee Free Choice Act)

      3. Nixon was successfully able to divide Democratic coalition on social issues ("Acid, Amnesty, and Abortion"). But here, the culture has changed & Dems consensus strongly pro-LGBT, reproductive freedom. Marijuana legalization looks like a winning issue (as it was in Canada).

      4. Maybe the one salient lesson from 1972 is that if a left candidate runs, establishment Dems will go out of their way to sabotage the campaign (LBJ told Nixon he preferred him to McGovern). In that sense, Summers tweet is a threat.https://twitter.com/LHSummers/status/1188083974146592774 …

          5. Also, any statement Larry Summers makes against wealth tax has to be weighed against fact he benefits from current inequality since as university major-domo he was showered with plutocratic largess. Addendum: Here's a photo of Summers with Jeffrey Epstein.pic.twitter.com/g8wyG4Ox0r

Didn’t it come out a few years back that Humphrey called Nixon on election night 1972 to congratulate him on his win?

The one salient lesson from 1972 is that Nixon - NIXON - received over 47 million POPULAR votes, while McGovern got less than 30 million. Something similar happened in 1964, where the extreme loser got less than 30 million votes, the winner over 40 million.

I will grant, however, that @realDonaldTrump does not fit into any recognizable category on the political spectrum. Those who characterize Trump as a conservative may want to check with @WalshFreedom or @justinamash .

But this is BS. Nixon was in no way a Trump. Good God he was in Congress for 4 years and then Vice President for 8 years. If there is any parallel it's Herbert Hoover who was a businessman and then appointed Secretary of Commerce. And we all know how that turned out...

As one of the local Dems running the McGovern campaign, the "old-time" party hacks did everything to sabotage our work. Soured me on politics for three decades!

All it takes to sabotage a left campaign is for a famous centrist to just enter the race as a third party. Something which can never be prevented. The center has an effective veto and that’s as it should be
