a totally normal piece from the federalist arguing that the 2016 election means trump is immune from accountability until the next election which may also be illegitimate if trump loses.pic.twitter.com/gqtf0K40BN

Without a doubt. This one is really Hemingway at her most daft and extreme, but it represents a deeply embittered and enraged faction. The word revanchist fits perfectly.
I don’t think republicans have really thought through the logic of “youre not a legitimate president if you win under circumstances where some fbi officials and congressional committees ginned up a mountain of fake scandal from acts that don’t constitute serious misconduct”
I started writing this with the stab-in-the-back myth in mind but thought the Lost Cause better mirrored the emerging false mythos and the U.S.'s own history of political violence.https://newrepublic.com/article/155245/donald-trumps-new-lost-cause …
I mean, Lost Cause fits US's own history of political violence better but GOP Congresspeople have already busted out stab-in-the-back language - most notably Mo Brooks literally quoting Mein Kampf to accuse socialists & fake news of spreading the Big Lie to undermine the nation.
... what is the stabbed in the back myth?
Like the Lost Cause, they're developing a pretty airtight catechism.
Trump started this myth in 2016 when he proclaimed that his not winning the election was proof that the election was rigged. It was a double whammy, providing cover for his own election rigging while also mobilizing popular sentiment in favor of his preferred mythology.
