No man, the modernist high/low division has been the anomaly in literary history (running from around 1890-1960). Something like poptimism has been the norm for narrative art since forever.

I don't know, I was writing and editing music criticism c. '04-'06 when those skirmishes were being waged and revived, and I didn't see it quite like that. A lot of poptimist crit was challenging gender and racial biases as well as aesthetic ones, and "rockist" (sorry, cont.) ...
