To be clear, Buttigieg was describing a justice he would envision under a reformed 15-member court including nonpartisan choices, not who he'd nominate under current rules.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1187423303402737664 …

the whole idea that the system depends on democrats playing nice and nominating centrists is garbage anyway. is that what republicans do? absolutely not. selecting centrists is giving the game away it's basic game theory -- it only works if both sides do it. they clearly aren't.
-
You sure that's really basic game theory?

If he’d said Sandra Day O’Connor, I’d be okay with it. But Kennedy voted for Citizens United and Shelby County. Kennedy is the last thing we need.

The question isn't what we need. I mean, now we have a more conservative swing justice. The question is whether one wants a Court that can swing far in either direction, or one that is more stable near the middle.

Let's dream big: a Merrick Garland/Stephen Breyer type justice as the swing vote!

You can either have the status quo which is susceptible to large swings either way in the Court, or a more stable middle-of-the road Court. Either one is legitimate. Choose your preference.
-
I think the point is that Kennedy was considerably to one side of the middle.

JFC: No. For the record: Merrick Garland was never going to be anything but a Gorsuch, Kavanaugh - like Supreme Court Justice either. Except as an insult to Obama, I never understood the angst over Merrick Garland.
