I also find the assumption that private insurers won't fight a public option to be questionable. Unless, that is, the public option is constructed exclusively as a dumping ground for people who aren't profitable for them to cover.

They have already made it crystal clear a public option and M4A are both unacceptable policy proposals. See here on the Partnership For America's Health Care Future (AHIP,,PhRMA, Fed. of American Hospitals, etc.) website for example.
