That’s not atypical of the NDP though. Past leaders like Jack Layton have tended to be personally very popular. Hasn’t always translated into actual seats on E-day.

Seeing as party discipline in Canada is strong enough that your average government MP could be replaced with a trained sea lion to bark and clap in Parliament whenever the PM speaks, I'd say way too many people think they are voting for the candidate in their riding.

The Prime Minister's Office has essentially executive power at this point so yes, our federal elections have become more similar to a Presidential vote or a party vote rather than a focus on local MPs.
