All moderates and many Democrats, including Obama and Biden, think the Republican Party will return to sanity if we just give it some time. I don't buy it. The only thing that will restore GOP sanity is crushing defeat that goes on for decades.

They had to lose the presidency 5 times in a row (1932-1948) before they were willing to settle for Eisenhower.

If you read Republican lore you'll know that Wilkie was foisted on the party by the Kingmakers of New York, while the Real Americans wanted Lindbergh.

The enduring feud between Lindbergh and FDR and all of the various reasons for it is one of the most interesting sub-chapters of 20th-century U.S. history. The potential counterfactuals are so numerous, far beyond The Plot Against America, and Gore Vidal's dad was involved.
