    Jeet Heer Retweeted Robert Wright

This is a fascinating point. Trump's greenlighting of an invasion was a violation of international law, but the American foreign policy establishment is so blinkered by its own commitments to hegemony that they don't even notice this.https://twitter.com/robertwrighter/status/1183393149819015169 …

    Robert Wright @robertwrighter
I also mean that the establishment’s consistent disregard for international law helped create an environment in which no one even raised the issue of lawlessness—i.e. that in greenlighting Turkey’s transborder aggression Trump was abetting a violation of international law.

Law assumes an enforcer. Nobody enforces but America. So they have a point.

International law lost relevance the moment the Iraq War happened despite mass protests worldwide against it.

That’s the single dumbest thing you’ve ever said. There’s no international legal obligation to put a nation’s armed forces in the way of a war between two other states. The US doesn’t even have the legal right to be there!

There's more to international relations than troop deployments.

International law was chucked overboard by the Bush regime. What we need an international recognition that it needs to be reestablished. A good way for the US to show goodwill to extradite Bush to the ICC or to Iraq.

Our presence in Syria is also a violation of international law. American Exceptionalism is a hell of a drug, isn't it.

@robertwrighter Are you sure this is correct? If Kurdish forces are launching armed attacks into Turkey from Syrian territory, wouldn’t international law permit Turkish counterattacks in Syria so long as they were proportionate?
