At Imperial Kuttz, Harris told this young woman, who is a polisci student in undergrad, that she should learn to code. It’s the second time she’s suggested that today — at an event earlier this morning, she told a student interested in law the same thing pic.twitter.com/QX8gjWvnFc

It's not bad advice. Coding is like learning a language, almost an essential skill today. You should learn to code AND do whatever else you want to

There's a big difference between doing her own statistics in R and hacking the microwave oven to receive free HBO. I would expect that that a poli sci professional would be capable of doing their much of own statistics and that means…coding.

No, Jeet, it's *good* advice. Seriously, what do you think it *means*? This is a freaking Poli Sci student - do you think it makes sense in 2019 to be a Political Scientist who doesn't understand how to code? Answer: It doesn't. Key prob is YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT "CODING" IS.

Thought exp: What if she'd said "learn statistics"? That's SEXY now; "numeracy" is hot. But you can't really be fully numerate without also being algorithmically literate.

Interesting that you presume— despite all evidence of Harris encouraging girls & women to be bold leaders — that the suggestion to learn coding is malevolent & that Harris encouraged them to drop their current pursuits. There is no evidence for your assertion.

Jeet, on here on the front lines of legal services delivery, I promise you that learning to code (while not a panacea) can definitely be a huge benefit to young lawyers. It might feel sad but it's very very true.
