If the Dems become more of a worker's party & the GOP continue in a Trumpist direction, the professional-managerial class will become politically homeless, maybe for the first time since 1900.

not sure about this. most of the professional class would benefit a great deal from a full-dress welfare state and so forth

True, part of the political dynamic at work is the PMC is under stress & so becoming more receptive to social democracy. That's true all across the western world.

Being in the 85th percentile is increasingly precarious when 2% of the people have sucked up most of the wealth.

as @interfluidity points out they are in many ways the key swing constituency here. if their fortunes can be tied up with the middle and working class you've got a much more solid and equal society

you are making that assumption based on publicly expressed opinions which gravely suffer from selection bias (i.e. maybe those who disagree are just afraid or simply don't care to engage). Out of every 10 "professional" who agrees with Charles Murray, not 1 will say it out loud

Hi, I think I'm supposed to be a member of this professional class you speak of, but I'm 31 and just this year have *less* than 6 figures of student loan debt from undergrad. I think the commentator class is divided by people who understand this and people who don't.

sounds like a perfect example of what Jeet is talking about. in ages past white-collar jobs came with a goodly portion of economic security, but they have become steadily more proletarianized
