I read an essay which described Anthony Powell -- from a gentry military family, Eton & Oxford education, married to a "Lady" -- as "middle class"

Is it middle class = newish, professional money and upper class = literal peers & the formal aristocracy?

I live the UK. Middle class means you have a profession, not a job (doctor lawyer professor etc) or own a successful company, your kids either go to private or at least a selective school if your area has those. Kate Middleton's family, for example, was described as middle class.

Yeah, for me the key part is 'not reliant on wages'. I'm in Scotland where a significant amount of our rural land is owned by the very rich so I'd agree with you there.
