I read an essay which described Anthony Powell -- from a gentry military family, Eton & Oxford education, married to a "Lady" -- as "middle class"

I live the UK. Middle class means you have a profession, not a job (doctor lawyer professor etc) or own a successful company, your kids either go to private or at least a selective school if your area has those. Kate Middleton's family, for example, was described as middle class.

Even though they're mega-wealthy and Kate and Pippa went to a very expensive, very exclusive boarding school. It covers a pretty wide swathe from economically-getting-by academics to mega, mega rich landowners, but it implies that you don't rely on wages, but aren't aristocracy.
