Yes, I think that's the core personal difference. His very security (more a matter of attitude than finances) made him more open-minded, in a way the others didn't feel free to be. It's very interesting. I might write an essay on this.

Auberon Waugh’s beef with Powell was semi-personal, I believe. Didn’t like the way Powell reviewed one of his books or a friend’s book, something like that.

Semi-personal but also, I think, oedipal. The elder Waugh was friends with Powell & always praised his work. Auberon of course had enormous daddy-issues.
