    Philanthropy isn’t just insufficient, it’s despotic. Letting the world’s richest people decide how to “help” society in whatever way they see fit, whenever they happen to feel like it, is undemocratic. Taxing their wealth and deciding together what to do with it is democratic

        The Workhouses were run by local government. They weren't funded by philanthropy they were funded from the poor rates, a local property tax.
